Contribution of nuclei accelerated by gamma-ray pulsars to cosmic rays in the Galaxy

چکیده
We consider the galactic population of gamma-ray pulsars as possible sources of cosmic rays at and just above the “knee” in the observed cosmic ray spectrum at 1015–1016 eV. We suggest that iron nuclei may be accelerated in the outer gaps of pulsars, and then suffer partial photo-disintegration in the non-thermal radiation fields of the outer gaps. As a result, protons, neutrons, and surviving heavier nuclei are injected into the expanding supernova remnant. We compute the spectra of nuclei escaping from supernova remnants into the interstellar medium, taking into account the observed population of radio pulsars. Our calculations, which include a realistic model for acceleration and propagation of nuclei in pulsar magnetospheres and supernova remnants, predict that heavy nuclei accelerated directly by gamma-ray pulsars could contribute about 20% of the observed cosmic rays in the knee region. Such a contribution of heavy nuclei to the cosmic ray spectrum at the knee can significantly increase the average value of 〈ln A〉 with increasing energy as is suggested by recent observations. Cosmic rays from Galactic pulsars
We calculate energy spectra and mass composition of cosmic rays accelerated by the galactic population of pulsars during their radio and gamma-ray phase. It is assumed that a significant part of the pulsar rotational energy is lost on acceleration of iron nuclei extracted from the surface of the neutron star. The nuclei are accelerated, at first when passing the outer gap of the inner pulsar ma...
متن کاملContribution of a nearby Pulsar to Cosmic Rays observed at Earth
Contribution of nearby pulsars to the cosmic rays observed at Earth has been studied. It is found that the experimental bound on amplitude of cosmic ray anisotropy may produce significant constraint on the efficiency of converting pulsar rotational energy to emitted particles kinetic energy. Cosmic ray fluxes from two well known nearby gamma ray pulsars, namely the Vela and Geminga pulsars, are...
متن کاملA Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei, Black Hole X-Ray Sources and Gamma-Ray Bursts
I consider models of active galactic nuclei, stellar-mass accreting black holes and microquasars based on a previously developed (Katz (1997)) model of gamma-ray bursts. When energy fluxes exceed a critical value ∼ 10 erg/cms, as in GRB, a black-body equilibrium pair plasma forms. At the lower fluxes found in AGN, BHXS and microquasars accretion power electrodynamically accelerates a small numb...

An analysis of arrival directions of extensive air showers (EAS) registered with the EAS MSU and EAS–1000 prototype arrays has revealed a region of excessive flux of PeV cosmic rays in the direction toward pulsars PSR J1840+5640 and LAT PSR J1836+5925 at significance level up to 4.5σ. The first of the pulsars was discovered almost 30 years ago and is a well-studied old radio pulsar located at t...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Study of Cosmic-Ray Propagation in the Galaxy and Diffuse Gamma- Ray Production
This work presents preliminary results for the time-dependent cosmic-ray propagation in the Galaxy by a fully 3-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation. The distribution of cosmic-rays (both protons and helium nuclei) in the Galaxy is studied on various spatial scales for both constant and variable cosmicray sources. The continuous diffuse gamma-ray emission produced by cosmic-rays during the propag...
